19th Century Finely Carved and Gilded Scotsman Counter-Top Tobacco Trade Figures

About the Item

Mid-19th Century carved and decorated counter-top Tobacconist’s Trade figures, circa 1850. Each with striking detail and beautiful patina, with the original gilding rubbed well into the wood creating a warm sheen. Each obviously carved by the same hand, but still distinctly different sculptures: one playing the highland pipes and the other standing proudly. These figures were akin to the more familiar "Cigar Store Indians" which advertised North American tobacco; Scottish figures advertised the purveyance of fine snuff. These counter-top figures are rarely seen and are much less common than the full-sized figures which stood outside. The figures remain in excellent condition; it looks like the Jacobite feather on one of the caps has been re-adhered. The patina can not be adequately photographed to do justice to the warm glow from the rubbed gilding. These were masterpieces in their day much finer and more sophisticated than the last pair sold on the market (for a higher price). Measures: 20-3/4 in High x 7-1/4 in Wide x 5 in Deep

A billethead was a smaller carving used in place of a figurehead, mounted under the bowsprit of a ship. As the 19th Century progressed and the age of clipper ships saw a move towards ever more extreme clipper bows, there was a need to eliminate unnecessary weight aboard ship, especially in the bow (to avoid burying the nose into every wave), so billet heads...
