About the Item
This work is a female bust by celebrated artist, Alexander Ney featuring his "hatchet head" theme and signature "holes", crafted in terracotta.
Born in Leningrad in 1939, Alexander Ney belongs to the generation of Soviet nonconformist artists that emerged during the post Stalin era in the late 1950s, championing alternatives to Socialist Realism. Ney’s uniquely individual style started developing while he lived in Russia, continued evolving after his emigration to Paris in 1972 and flourished when he arrived in New York City in 1974. He perfected a complex systematic technique using perforated terra-cotta. Starting in the 1970s, Ney’s works were feature in many solo, as well as select group exhibitions at prestigious galleries in New York and multiple international cities. Also, his works are included in museum and private collections all over the world. Additionally, Ney designed windows for Tiffany & Co every year from 1978 to 1994.
The distinctive “holes” featured in so many of his sculptures have been much discussed by critics and curators. “The geometric holes let in the light even as they show the light within giving the skull(s) mystic import”.
