About the Item

EUGÈNE MARIOTON French, 1857-1933 Diana, the Huntress Patinated and burnished bronze signed to base "Eug. Marioton" and cold-stamped by foundry "E. Colin et Cie Paris" Item # 305EBC12Q An incredibly beautiful representation of Diana the Huntress, this rather rare cast by Eugéne Marioton captures the goddess as a young woman with her bow resting gingerly against her upraised hand while she leans against the stump of a felled tree. Her other arm rests on the upper limits of the tree, cast outwards in an almost carefree manner that leaves her body in a dance-like posture. She looks only to her bow, her eyes turned downwards and her features incredibly peaceful. This is a model that very infrequently becomes available on the open-market. It was cast by the foundry of E. Colin et Cie in Paris during the first quarter of the 20th century. EUGÈNE MARIOTON Eugéne Marioton was born in Paris on April 7th of 1857, brother to the likewise famous sculptor Claudius Marioton. They enjoyed strong reputations and careers, Eugéne’s stretching over a fifty year period with his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1882 where he continued to exhibit regularly through 1922. Both he and his brother studied under Augustin Alexandre Dumont, and he further was pupil to Thomas and Bonnassieux. He won bronze medals at the 1889 and 1900 Exposition Universelle and a traveling scholarship in 1888. He specialized in small bronze works, mostly figural studies that were academic and executed in the Romantic taste. Of these, a majority were cast by the E. Colin and Siot-Decauville foundries, both prolific and highly skilled firms. Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work. ARTIST Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia.
