About the Item
One of a kind Belgian black marble sculpture on an iron base depicting part of a stylized female torso. What makes this work unique is the contrast between the polished and shiny surface of the front, which offers a soft and serene look, and the back, where the marble has a rough, unpolished finish, with rougher and more irregular shapes. The artist thus demonstrates his mastery of technique, combining curves with smooth, unworked, abrupt areas that cut across the entire profile, suggesting a tension between the natural and the sculpted.
This choice of not working on the entire surface, leaving part of the block in its raw state, is likely intended to somehow explore human nature or the duality between perfection and imperfection or unfinishedness. This technique was previously used by great artists such as Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), who sought to break with classical canons. In this way, he created sculptures with great contrasts, creating the sensation that the sculpture emerges from the stone. The contrasting surfaces and the dark color of the stone create visual contrasts of light, reflections, and shadows that captivate the viewer. It could be said that it is a dialogue between the human (represented in the female breast) and the natural (surfaces of the unpolished natural stone).
On the back, the artist's seal or signature, the initials "J.J.M." Created with spirals and geometric elements, this firm guarantees that it's a unique and original work that will become the centerpiece of any space where it's placed.
It,s an unique and collective art piece for an extraordinary cabinet of curiosities.
