About the Item

This spectacular pair of antique French neoclassical Napoleon III period statues were created in spelter then given a superb patinated bronze finish. The work represents Eurydice and Orpheus, the romantic couple from the legendary and beloved ancient Greek myth. An allegory about love and passion, and also about the weaknesses of the human spirit, it has inspired many important painters, such as Peter Paul Rubens and Nicolas Poussin. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is the ultimate story of love, beauty and music overcoming all, even death. Legend has it that Orpheus used to spend much of his early years in the idyllic pursuits of music and poetry. His skill had gained him fame and respect. Humans and beasts alike would be enchanted by it which is why in this statue of Orpheus you see a panther by his feet, enthralled by his music. He was a master of the lyre and his melodious voice garnered him audiences from near and afar, and it was at one such gathering that his eyes fell on a wood nymph. The girl was called Eurydice, and she was as beautiful as she was shy. She had been drawn to Orpheus, enamored by his voice, and such was the spell of beauty in his music and appearance that neither could take their eyes off each other. In this work, Eurydice is depicted as being enchanted by his music, and inspired to dance. Something inexplicable tugged the hearts of the two young people and soon they fell deeply in love, unable to spend a single moment apart. This pair of antique statues is a penultimate representation of the Romantic Era in Art during the latter half of the 19th century in Europe. Circa 1880s
