French Art Deco Patinated Sculpture of Sisyphus
About the Item
An early 20th century French art deco patinated plaster sculpture of Sisyphus and the boulder, marked ‘RIBB 137’. Inspired by Greek mythology, this decorative statue sees Sisyphus, the King of Corinth, pushing a boulder.
According to legend, Sisyphus had escaped death twice, both times for which the Gods were very displeased. As punishment after Sisyphus died and entered the underworld, he was condemned to roll a large rock up a hill for it only to roll back down when he reached the top, repeating this gruelling task for eternity.
Spanning 58cm (23 in) wide, this original Art Deco retelling of Sisyphus’ story is a stunning decorative piece for interior display. The artist captures the figure’s strength in his striking stance and the plaster is beautifully finished in a green tone to resemble patinated bronze.

The spelter works in this pair are after two of the leading Art Nouveau period sculptors: George Maxim and Auguste Moreau. The sculptures portray young women in animated, dance-like postures, wearing flowing dress that recalls Greek wet drapery. One figure holds a musical instrument, while the other spreads her arms as if to music. The figures stand on integral rocky bases above matching marble plinths.
