About the Item

"A Frolic at the Old Homestead" by John Rogers, 1881 – Antique Painted Plaster Sculpture Origin: United States Date of Design: 1881 Estimated Production Date: Late 19th – Early 20th Century Artist: John Rogers (American, 1829–1904) Medium: Painted Plaster Dimensions: Height: 57 cm (22.4 in) Width: 43 cm (16.9 in) Depth: 36 cm (14.2 in) Description: A finely detailed antique figural group by celebrated American sculptor John Rogers, titled “A Frolic at the Old Homestead” and first modelled in 1881. One of the artist’s most endearing domestic compositions, this large-scale group captures a moment of rural merriment, rendered in Rogers’ distinctive narrative style. This example bears the impressed marks: “John Rogers / New York / 1881” and displays the characteristic modelling, patina, and scale associated with original period casts. Rogers' figural groups were widely celebrated in Gilded Age America for their charm, accessibility, and finely observed character studies. This particular piece exemplifies his skill in conveying both motion and sentiment. Condition: Good original condition, with minor wear to the painted surface, notably to the blindfold and head of the tallest figure. Structurally sound, with expected surface marks and ageing consistent with a late 19th-/early 20th-century plaster cast. Later baize added to underside for protection. Provenance: Private UK collection
