Gaetano Pompa Mid-Century Cast and Gilt Bronze, Winged Deity
About the Item
An authentic and fantastic example of Italian mid-century Art by Gaetano Pompa (Italy, 1933-1998). Signed and dated Roma 1966 on the back of one wing. Hollow cast with gilt finish and applied linear details. The standing deity with large curved wings wears a helmet, breastplate and epaulettes. The eclectic artist's inspiration is in nature, ancient and tribal arts. Mounted on a hand-crafted wood base.

Gaetano Pompa
Gaetano Pompa was an Italian artist who began his artistic career after the war conflict in Rome, where he moved with his family to start his studies and to paint and engrave. From 1958–61, he lived in the Schwabing district of Munich, carrying out an intense artistic activity and participating with great passion in the musical life of the Bavarian city. Back in Italy, he married Dorothea Leendertz, known in Germany, with whom he had five children. Since then Pompe lived and operated in Rome and from 1970 between Ansedonia and Orbetello.
