Grand Tour Verdigris Marble After Giambologna, The Abduction of a Sabine Woman'
Italy, Mid- 19th century, Attributed to the workshops of Benedetto Boschetti.
This rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional 19th century Grand Tour depiction of Giambologna's masterwork. Standing three-feet tall, hand carved in beautiful specimen verdigris marble.
The statue depicts three spiraling/ undulating nude figures, a young man in the center who holds a woman above a crouching older man below.
This highly detailed, technically challenging example, captures the essence of the original sculpture, the arcs, bends, curves, the convolution is well executed, the movement is evident. The varying diameter of the sculpture is 12-inches, raised on the 9-Inch square rock-work base.

Abduction of a Sabine Woman (or Rape of the Sabine Women) the original is a large and complex marble statue by the Flemish sculptor and architect Johannes of Boulogne Giambologna. It was completed between 1579 and 1583 this work is widely considered his masterpiece. It can still be viewed in Florence’s Loggia dei Lanzi, Piazza della Signoria.
Condition Report :
We acquired this work in the remarkable condition as shown. We did no restoration except a light cleaning. Since this work is approximately 150 years old, some older repairs are evident on some of the fingers.
