Important Maison Gripoix Floral Arrangement, Yves Saint Laurent

About the Item

Important Gripoix Floral Arrangement, from the former YSL Showroom on West 57th St in New York City. One of an important trio that were used for decoration within the Lalanne designed iron showcases used throughout. These were obviously commissioned by Mssr Berge or Saint Laurent for the decor from Maison Gripoix in Paris as they also created extraordinary jewelry for many of their collections. Completely hand made in a process that is dying, where bronze wirework is formed into petals and molten glass is poured into each setting which is then assembled into a floral or leaf form. The entire piece is then dipped in a plating bath to achieve the silver tone on the metal areas. Incredibly labor intensive, this sculpture likely took months to manufacture. Circa 1970's France. Mssrs Berge and St. Laurent were known to have extraordinary taste, during their lifetimes they amassed one of the most important collections of 19th C. and 20th Century Art and Decorative Arts in the world. A rare opportunity to own something from their incredibly aesthetic lives. Height 26", Width 16" across. Silvered Pot 7" height.

Wear consistent with age and use. There are 3 of these available from the YSL showroom. They were housed in custom bronze Lalanne showcases which are also available. Each flower arrangement has a different pot as the base but essentially has the same flowers. Only 3 in existence.

IMPORTANT WOOD SCULPTURE REPRESENTING SAINT BARBARA ORIGIN : NORTHERN FRANCE OR FLANDERS PERIOD : 16th CENTURY Height: 103 cm Length: 40 cm Depth: 30 cm Oak wood Good condition Saint Barbara was the daughter of Dioscorus who imprisonned her in a tower to prevent her from being corrupted by Christianity. Despite this, she was taught and baptisted by a local priest. According to legend, she proved her faith by carving a third window into the tower, symbolic of the Trinity. Once her father learned this, he threatened her with his sword. She managed to escape and hide, not before being revealed by a sheperd. She was thrown in jail and tortured, refusing to denounce her faith. Her father forced her up to the mountain’s summit and decapitated her, afterwhich God struck him down by lightning.
