About the Item

This refined and precious white porcelain sculpture is depicting the sleeping Infant Christ that became a very popular subject in Baroque art sice the 17th Century. The delicate and extremely poignant expressive features of the present Infant derived from a wax model by Giovan Battista Foggini 1652 - 1727, as mentioned in the Doccia Inventory, pag. 27: n. 10 a wax Infant Christ sleeping on the Cross. By Foggini with the mould. See K. Lankheit, Die modellsammlung der Porzellan manufaktur Doccia, Munchen, 1982 pag. 127. Apart from the present Infant Child, two more versions are known: one formerly in the Giusti collection (Milan) illustrated at that time by Lankheit, and the other one formerly in the Lukacs collection (Rome). During the 18th Century, Doccia was the third largest porcelain factory in Europe, after Meissen (1710) and Vienna (1718), not including the short-lived Venetian factory of Francesco Vezzi (1720 - 1727). Doccia was therefore an important centre, exhibiting models of renewed sculpotrs, with a view to producing large numbers of figures, group busts and reliefs. The piece is in excellent state of maintenance and it is guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned not restored and it is original. This item has the Certificate of Authenticity. The documents will be shown on demand in case of interest.
