Japanese antique small Jizo stone Buddha / 1700-1850 / Edo period /Garden object

About the Item

This is a small stone statue believed to have been made in Japan during the mid to late Edo period (18th to 19th century). The figure represents "Jizo Bosatsu" (Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva), one of the revered bodhisattvas in the Buddhist tradition. Jizo is a figure of infinite compassion, believed to save all sentient beings from suffering. He is typically depicted as a gentle monk, with a shaved head and wearing a long robe known as kesa. He often holds a staff in his right hand and a hoju (wish-fulfilling jewel) in his left—symbols of his power to guide souls and grant comfort. This particular Jizo statue shows him with both hands pressed together in a prayer-like pose (gassho), which is another common and symbolic gesture of the Jizo Bosatsu. The material appears to be andesite, and despite its modest size—small enough to be held in one hand (W10 × D10.5 × H24.5cm)—the statue possesses a strong and dignified presence. The soft expression on its face radiates calmness and serenity, gently embracing the hearts of those who look upon it. The surface of the stone has taken on a beautifully aged patina through years of exposure, enhancing its depth and character. At the same time, the outlines of the carving remain clear, and the form of Jizo is still distinctly recognizable. The statue can stand on its own, but due to the shape of its base, it tends to tilt backward. For stability, a simple clay support is included. There are also traces on the base where a rubber pad was once attached for anti-slip purposes; however, this does not interfere with appreciation or display. Small stone statues of Jizo like this are relatively rare on the market, making this a highly recommended piece for collectors. Its compact size allows it to be displayed anywhere—from a room shelf or entranceway to a garden corner or under the eaves—where it will quietly radiate a peaceful presence.
