About the Item

One of the most renowned sculptures ever created by Robert Tait McKenzie, this medal depicting three nude male hurdlers represents, in miniature form, a relief created in 1912 for the facade of the Olympic stadium in Stockholm. McKenzie was, for many years, the world's leading sculptor of young athletes, and he often used student athletes at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as Professor of Physical Education, as his models. He also created reliefs to celebrate the University's Relay Carnival, now known as Penn Relays, and created a medal for the Society of Medalists. McKenzie was a remarkable polymath, acting as physician, physical therapist, physical educator, and sculptor over his lifetime, and In 1931 he was appointed the J. William White Research Professor of Physical Education. This medal was commissioned by Union Carbide in 1983, and it was struck by the Medallic Art Company, which made most of the fine art medals in America through the 20th century. The original presentation box is included.

"Allegory of Speed, " Art Deco Bronze Depicting the Ecstasy of Athletic Effort
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large, rare and dramatic, this Art Deco bronze by Robert Delandre, circa 1930, depicts three nude male athletes all straining to reach the finish line of the race, their arms straining forward to win, and upward in ecstatic joy. The concentration and focus evident in their faces, and the beauty of their physiques, is beautifully captured by the artist, and the bronze is gorgeously finished in a green-brown patina that brings out the details of each figure. Delandre is largely known for his tabletop bronzes for the home or office, but he also entered competitions for public monuments and memorials. His most famous work is the "Monument to the Latham 47 Heroes" in Caudebec en Caux, France. The sculpture honors the men who disappeared in the prototype of the Latham 47 twin engine airplane in 1928, with Roald...

In 1927, he received a prestigious medal of honor for his exceptional work. A close companion of Max Le Verrier, Pierre collaborated extensively with the Le Verrier foundry, which produced numerous pieces of his art. In addition to his given name, he also employed two pseudonyms, Fayral and Guerbe, which were derived from the surnames of his mother and wife respectively. As a leading sculptor, Pierre's creations earned consistent praise for their exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to anatomical precision. His artistic endeavors extended beyond sculpture, as he also designed pieces for Goldscheider in Paris, working under the label "La Stele." Pierre's versatility encompassed various mediums, including ivory, bronze, spelter, stone, wood, alabaster, and ceramics. Notably, he received artistic education alongside his friend Max Le Verrier, studying together at the Beaux Arts in Geneva. Throughout their lives, Pierre maintained strong friendships with both Marcel Bouraine and Max Le Verrier, with the latter's foundry being instrumental in producing many of Le Faguays' statues.
