About the Item

L'amour domptant la grâce" (Love dominating Grace). Bronze, marble, France, 19th century. Cast bronze sculpture that shows a half-naked boy, carrying reeds in one hand and riding on a swan, with an enraged expression, which he grasps by the long neck while the animal is perched. The rectangular base is in dark veined marble, simple so as not to detract from the figure. References have been found to showing how the virtue of Grace is dominated through love, although it is true that the theme of infantile figures riding swans is a very frequent one throughout the History of Art. The British Museum in London preserves a Hellenistic terracotta from around 300 BC, and we must not forget the "Boy of the Goose" by Boeto of Chalcedon. In addition, there are numerous examples in painting, engraving, porcelain (Meissen, among other factories, made variations of the theme), fountains (Versailles, for example, has an outstanding example; there is another in La Granja de San Ildefonso de Segovia), bronzes (James Pradier with the Barbedienne Foundry made small works of that Niño de la Oca but also sculptures entitled Child with Swan, to name a small sample), etc. However, it is true that the most common is to find Eros, son of Venus in classical mythology (the swan being the emblem of this goddess), but it is not unusual for the human figure to have no wings; or putti (children's figures also winged). Another important difference in the many examples of this iconography is the attitude of the animal, somewhat contrasting in this case (the posture expresses calm and elegance, but the head has a slightly violent air).
