Sebastian c. AD 255 – c. AD 288 was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to traditional belief, he was killed during the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians. He was initially tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows, though this did not kill him. He was, according to tradition, rescued and healed by Irene of Rome. In all versions of the story, shortly after his recovery he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death. He is venerated in the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church as the patron saint of athletics, archery, and plagues.
The belief that Saint Sebastian was a defence against the plague was a medieval addition to his reputation, which largely accounts for the enormous increase in his importance in the Late Middle Ages. The connection of the martyr shot with arrows and the plague reflects Sebastian being able to recover from his martyrdom as the arrow-wounds can resemble the symptoms of bubonic plague. Visually, "the arrow wounds call to God for mercy to us, as the symptoms of the infirm call for pity.
As protector of potential plague victims, Sebastian occupied an important place in the popular medieval mind. He was among the most frequently depicted of all saints by Late Gothic and Renaissance artists, in the period after the Black Death. The opportunity to show a semi-nude young male, often in a contorted pose, also made Sebastian a favourite subject. His shooting with arrows was the subject of the largest engraving by the Master of the Playing Cards in the 1430s, when there were few other current subjects with male nudes other than Christ.
Many religious images depict Saint Sebastian as an erotic or homoerotic martyr, with his strong muscular physique, symbolic arrows piercing the flesh, and in the throws of rapturous ecstatic pain.

According to Jocobus de Varagine’s Golden Legend Sebastian was born in Narbonne where he was promoted head of the first cohort by emperors Maximian and Diocletian who were fond of him. One day as Marcellin and Marc were condemned because of their Christian faith Sebastian urged them to not give away. He would then convert many Roman soldiers before being reported to Diocletian. The emperor had him tied against a post in a middle of the Field of Mars and pierced by the soldiers’ arrows. Sebastian did not die and recovered thanks to Irene’s good care. Once he had recovered from his injuries he went to the palace to critized the emperor’s attitude towards Christians. Sebastian was beaten to death.
Following the common iconography Saint Sebastian is here depicted leaning against crooked tree with his arms tied with ropes.
His peaceful face presents a straight nose and small lips framed by his hair locks. His head turned to the right side is slighlty tilted backwards as if he was gazing at the sky.
Saint Sebastian body’s is gracefully presented in contrapposto. Almost completely naked a single piece of draped cloth is tied on his right hip and fall over his left knee. The carved folds give the fabric the realness of a heavy cloth.
The arrows wounds are still visible. The saint’s anatomy with its bulging muscles and protruding ribs illustrate the sculptor’s skills. The right arm’s movement enlivens the sculpture.
The artist who authored this sculpture knew how to breathe grace and life to his work through the expression of the saint’s face...

Polychrome carved wooden sculpture of Saint Sebastian, late 16th century. JUAN D
Located in Madrid, ES
"Polychrome carved wooden sculpture of Saint Sebastian, late 16th century. JUAN DE JUNI"
Attributed to: Circle of Juan de Juni (Valladolid School)
Date: Circa 1580-1600
Material: Carved wood and gilded polychrome (estofado)
Dimensions: 73 x 33 x 21 cm
Origin: Spain
Description:
A powerful late Renaissance depiction of Saint Sebastian, masterfully carved in wood and richly polychromed and gilded (estofado technique). This Spanish sculpture, probably from the late 16th century, displays expressive anatomy, emotional tension, and dramatic movement—stylistic traits strongly associated with the school of Juan de Juni, a leading figure in Castilian sculpture of the period.
Sebastian is depicted half-naked, tied to a tree trunk, with traces of blood and arrows, symbols of his martyrdom. The sculpture demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, particularly in the modeling of the torso, the twisted posture, and the naturalistic treatment of the face and hair.
The piece retains much of its original polychromy and gilding, with some expected age-related losses. It has undergone preventive conservation treatment to ensure its structural stability while preserving its historical authenticity.
Condition:
Generally good condition considering its age. Some loss of polychromy and gilding is visible, particularly on the torso and base, but the sculpture retains a remarkable degree of originality. A professional restoration was carried out to strengthen and preserve the structure.
Provenance: Private collection, Spain.
Juan de Juni (circa 1507-1577) was a renowned sculptor and architect of French origin, probably born in Joigny, Burgundy, France. Although born in France, he spent most of his career in Spain, where he became one of the major figures of 16th-century Spanish religious sculpture...
