About the Item

Liberty sculpture in Bronze and marble. French-Austrian sculptor, Friedrich Solomon Beer (1846-1912) Friedrich Salomon Beer (1846-1912) was a prominent Austrian-French sculptor whose work spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here's a summary of his life and career: • Early Life and Education: Born on September 1, 1846, in Brno (then part of the Austrian Empire, now in the Czech Republic), Friedrich Beer was the son of a merchant. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by relatives. His artistic journey began with an apprenticeship as a meerschaum carver in Vienna at the age of fifteen. From 1865 to 1870, he honed his skills at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, studying under notable sculptors like Carl Radnitzky and Franz Bauer. • Early Career and Travels: Beer's talent was recognized early, and he received the Rome scholarship for his figure group "Achilles and Penthesilea." This prestigious award allowed him to work in a studio in the Palazzo di Venezia in Rome for three years (around 1870). After returning to Vienna in 1873, he eventually settled in Paris in 1875, marking a significant shift in his career. • Parisian Period and Artistic Style: In Paris, Beer initially focused on charming female portraits and statuettes, often collaborating with the humorist Alfred Grévin. His work often reflects the refined taste of the Belle Époque, with a blend of classical influences and a touch of modern sensibility. • Later Career and Zionist Themes: In the 1890s, Beer's artistic focus expanded. He met prominent Zionist figures like Theodor Herzl and Max Nordau, and subsequently created several sculptures with Zionist themes, demonstrating his engagement with contemporary social and political movements. • Final Years in Florence: In 1902, Beer relocated to Florence, Italy, where he spent the last decade of his life. He passed away on October 18, 1912, in Florence. • Notable Works and Recognition: While a comprehensive list of all his works is not readily available, some notable pieces include: o "Albrecht Dürer as a Boy" (marble sculpture, early 1870s), which was acquired by the National Gallery in Berlin and was later rediscovered after being thought lost during the war. o "Bust of Mihály Munkácsy" (bronze, 1875), housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. o His works have appeared at auction, with pieces like "Escholier of the 15th century" achieving notable prices. Friedrich Salomon Beer's legacy lies in his elegant and refined sculptures, his adaptability in different artistic centers like Rome, Vienna, and Paris, and his contribution to the late 19th and early 20th-century European sculptural landscape.

"Galata Morente" Sculpture in Bronze, sign: F. Barbedienne Fonduer
By F. Barbedienne Foundry
Located in Ciudad Autónoma Buenos Aires, C
F. Barbedienne fonduer Ferdinand Barbedienne (6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.[2] From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 the firm briefly had to switch to cannon founding owing to the shortage of metals but resumed business afterwards. Following Barbedienne's death in 1892, he was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the firm was carried on by his nephew Gustave Leblanc until 1952. Among the principal artists reproduced by the firm were Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin. The Dying Galata (Italian: Galata morente...
