About the Item

Lombard-Venetian school, 17th century Pair of holding angels (2) Gilded and carved wood, h. 94 cm Studies of sculpture between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in recent years have honed a certain sensitivity to polychrome wooden artifacts: in this perspective, Lombard-Venetian Baroque sculpture has emerged as an area of extraordinary richness, at the crossroads of historical paths in northern Italy. Wooden sculpture possesses aesthetic instances, devotional employment and ambitions of naturalism discernible in the works, which appear only at a superficial glance to be heterogeneous in terms of models, cultural references, and fields of operation, when in fact they are notable for elements that can be considered glues of an experience of polychrome wood sculpture. This pair of carved and gilded wooden holding angels represents a splendid example of Lombard-Venetian sculpture referable to the 17th century. They are distinguished by their high artistic quality and remarkable executive refinement, clearly visible especially in the rendering of the robes and draperies, which softly envelop the bodies, but also in the extraordinary technical meticulousness. Depicted with characteristic golden ringlets, the two angels rest on plinths characterized by frothy clouds with golden reflections from which sprout, on the front in the center of the scroll-like supports, the heads of cherubs. Both are respectively holding, with their left hand the former and their right hand the latter, a golden cornucopia while looking with serene and seraphic expressions at the viewer. The chiastic pose and wavy draperies make the figures appear more dynamic, following typically Baroque stylistic elements, also discernible in the shining gilding and the complexity of the forms.
