About the Item
Mexican Ceramic Clay Hand Sculpture by Manuel Reyes Handmade Folk Art from Oaxaca
This Mexican ceramic hand sculpture is a one-of-a-kind piece handcrafted by renowned ceramic artist Manuel Reyes. Made using natural clay sourced from Oaxaca and Zacatecas, Mexico, this unique sculpture is shaped entirely by hand using traditional hand-modeling techniques. The piece is then fired in a classic wood-fired kiln, preserving ancient artisanal processes that have been passed down through generations.
Each finger of the hand features intricately sculpted birds, inspired by traditional textile patterns from Chiapas. According to Manuel Reyes, the central figure of the sculpture was inspired by a close friend with a deep love for birds and nature. This emotional connection gives the piece both personal significance and artistic depth.
Manuel Reyes (Mexico City, 1972) is an accomplished Mexican ceramic artist, sculptor, and painter. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Xochimilco, Mexico, and was mentored by prominent artists such as Royer Von Guten, Joy Laville, Francisco Lastra, and Juan Soriano. Later, Reyes settled in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca, reconnecting with his ancestral roots and working with the region’s famed strong clay, ideal for detailed modeling.
Reyes uses natural pigments and oxides from Oaxaca and Zacatecas to color his work, drawing continuous inspiration from the natural world. His pre-Hispanic influences are reflected in his organic forms and symbolic motifs, making his work highly collectible and deeply rooted in Mexican folk art traditions.
His sculptures have been exhibited in prestigious venues such as the Museum of Popular Cultures in Mexico City, where his work celebrates Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and artisanal legacy.
This stunning handcrafted ceramic sculpture is a meaningful addition to any collection of Mexican folk art, ceramic sculpture, or organic modern art. Its combination of traditional techniques and personal storytelling makes it a true collector’s piece.
