About the Item

"Monumental Allegorical Marble Sculpture, Grand Tour (late 19th / Early 20th Century)" This finely carved solid white marble architectural model depicts an allegorical narrative in high relief across two panels, housed within a neoclassical temple-like structure. Likely created in France or Italy circa 1880–1930, the work is stylistically aligned with patriotic memorial art, drawing on the iconographic language of the Risorgimento, Jeanne d’Arc, and post-WWI commemorations. The front and rear panels feature deeply carved reliefs: One side shows a winged female figure—likely representing Victory or Divine Inspiration—rising above a group of armed men and youth in motion, evoking the heroic spirit of national defense. The opposite panel features a crowned female figure flanked by semi-nude and robed allegorical women, one holding a palm frond, others kneeling—suggesting sacrifice, rebirth, and feminine virtues such as Liberty, Peace, and Charity. The sides and base are architecturally structured with a blind niche framed by classical columns and an arched decorative molding, beneath a dentil cornice and triangular pediment. The entire structure rests on a stepped plinth base, reinforcing its function as a symbolic monument rather than a scale replica of an existing building. Material: Solid white marble (not alabaster), finely detailed Dimensions: heigth 28.5 cm, width 20.5 cm, depth 20 cm Condition: Excellent vintage condition, with light patination and no major losses Origin: Probably Italy or France, studio-produced Date: Circa 1880–1930 This piece was likely created as a memorial object or commemorative sculpture, either to honor the ideals of heroism, sacrifice, and nationhood, or specifically referencing Jeanne d’Arc, whose iconography closely matches the narrative progression of the two scenes. Its use of high allegory and classical vocabulary places it in the tradition of late Romantic and early Beaux-Arts sculpture. It may have been intended for private devotional use, salon display, or commemorative purposes—possibly linked to national anniversaries or civic remembrance.
