About the Item

Pair of French 18th Century Louis XVI Bronze Sculpture of Faun and Bacchante Rare pair of bronze sculptures depicting Bacchante and Faun after a design by Jean-Hugues Taraval in 1773. Jean-Hugues Taraval (1729-1785) was a French painter known for the 'Triumph of Bacchus', part of the ceiling of the Galerie d'Apollon in the Louvre. Taraval's design was a popular design and originally developed by Josse-Francois- Joseph Leriche (modeller) into Sevres biscuit statuettes as part of a group of sculptures for a table centrepieces ("Surtout de Bacchaus"). Bacchante holds an amphora, a vase of fruits at her foot while faun holds a flute and is standing, leaning against a tree trunk, at his feet is an overturned amphora and a gourd. Both finely chased with an olive-brown patina on veined marble socles. Literature: Préaud, Tanara/Scherf, Guilhelm (Ed.): La manufacture des Lumières -  la sculpture à Sèvres de Louis XV à la Revolution, Dijon, 2015, pp. 174-177, fig. 141, 142
