A Pair of Linden Wood Austrian Angels

About the Item

Exquisitely carved in linden wood, this pair of Austrian Baroque angels epitomizes the dynamic movement and dramatic expression characteristic of the period. Each figure is rendered with remarkable attention to detail, from the flowing drapery of the robes to the expressive facial features and reaching and gesturing hands. The figures—possibly suggesting allegorical virtues— are seated in contrapposto, creating a sense of motion and liveliness. Most likely they were seated in the clouds -thus their lack of wings! These are virtuoso carvings, with the emotional and intellectual depth that reward repeated viewing. The warm and imperfect patina of the painted surface enhances the beauty of wood carving. Traces of original pigments remain chalky and dry. They do not appear to have been gilt. Likely placed above the altar in the private chapel of a noble house, these fine figures reflect the spiritual vision and enlightenment sensibility of the 18th century Austria under the Hapsburgs.
