Pair of Small 18th Century Carved Oak Statues from France

About the Item

This pair of small hand carved oak statues measure only 13 inches high (33 cm), and were likely originally, part of a larger structure. Oak was the predominate wood used for making furniture up through the 1700s. The wood grain is considered beautiful, and it is a strong and sturdy wood, meaning that products will last for centuries. However, these same traits make it rather difficult to carve. Despite this fact, the statues are presented with great detail, proving the carver highly skilled. Both figures are wearing long, flowing robes that hang off the left shoulder. The carver took great care to show the folds of the fabrics as they contour to the characters’ bodies. The figures are depicted as shoeless and kneeling on stylized clouds. Both figures are depicted genuflecting on their right knee, indicating that they are praying or paying respect to a sacrament. Both statues have small holes in their backs, indicating that the figures were probably winged angels at one point. Beneath the stylized clouds, are short square plinths made in pine, with a small hole in the center, indicating this is where they were affixed to another element. These beautifully carved antique French oak statues can now be displayed on any table, shelf, or in a vitrine.

Mid-18th Century French Carved Polychrome Statue of Moses in Oak Niche
Located in Dallas, TX
Crafted in France circa 1760 and resting in a carved oak niche, the figure depicts the prophet Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism and Christianity. Moses is best known from the story in the biblical Book of Exodus and Quran as the lawgiver who met God face-to-face on Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments after leading his people, the Hebrews, out of bondage in Egypt and to the "promised land" of Canaan. He is represented with horns on top of his head. The horns came about because of an ambiguity of the Latin version of Exodus 34, 30. After being addressed by God on top of Mount Sinai and given the Tablets of the Law containing the Ten Commandments, Moses descended to his people in the desert. His face was seen to shine with a divine light. (The first Moses with horns was commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb; it was based on a description in chapter 34 of Exodus in the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible used at that time). The religious and biblical item...
