Superb, large and exquisitely detailed Carrara marble sculpture of a cherub riding a dolphin by Hippolyte Ferrat, France 19th century, Romantic period. Signed. In very good condition. On a veined marble base which has small signs of use. Dimensions in cm ( H x L x l ) : 38 x 55 x 25 On April 8, 1841, Hippolyte Ferrat was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under James Pradier. He was awarded the Second Prix de Rome in 1850. He exhibited at the Salon from 1849 to 1870. In 1849, he designed The Fall of Icarus, which is now exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1859, Hippolyte Ferrat created a statue of politician François Denis Tronchet for the Conseil d'État. In 1860, a monumental fountain by Théophile de Tournadre6 was built in the center of the Place de la Rotonde in Aix-en-Provence. Superb bronze sculpture with green patina hues by Gaston Hauchecorne, France 1920s. Representation of a Malay pirate holding on to the railing of a ship with on hand and to the steering with the other. Beautiful detailing in the hands, muscles and face. In very good condition. Dimensions in cm ( H x L x l ) : 18.5 x 36 x 12.5 Secure shipping. Hauchecome was the brother of the French consul in Imperial China, Armand Hauchecorne. At the turn of the century, he was a professor at Peking University. In the literature, he is also mentioned as the managing director of the consulate in Chongqing, as an interpreter in Beijing (1911) or as a "diplomat" in France (1940), who had "spent a large part of his working life in China". Hauchecome produced numerous sculptures with Chinese motifs in terracotta and bronze, some with a humorous undertone. He exhibited his works at the Exposition nationale coloniale de Marseille in 1922 and at several salons of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in the 1920s. After studying at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and the Art Institute of Chicago, David moved to Paris in 1950 to work and teach, He studied in the atelier of Fernand Leger and then traveled around other Western European countries. He has been shown in galleries from Paris, France, to Los Angeles, California, including the Whitney Museum in New York City. Segel enjoyed a prolific career and worked with a variety of mediums including: oils, bronze and wood sculptures, and dramatic sketches. He also worked in furniture and interior design. Segel’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum. His awards include The First Carnegie Prize and The Hallmark International Art Award. David Segel died in Venice, California in 2005 at the age of 84.
