About the Item
An important bronze with a green patina, signed Alexandre Ouline (1887-1965). Ouline is known as one of the sculptors representative of the Art Deco movement and has worked in France between 1918 and 1940.
This bronze depicts a bust of Jean Mermoz in the prime of his life.
Born in 1901, Jean Mermoz, nicknamed the Archangel, was a legendary French aviator in the airmail industry. He also co-founded the French Social Party in 1936. He disappeared that same year in flight following an engine failure, at coordinates 11°08 North, 22°40 West, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
This work rests on a black marble base with a plaque inscribed "The Prisoners of War & Escaped Prisoners of Nantes to their President 1938." In addition to its representation of the great man that Mermoz was, this work will delight visitors for its size and quality craftsmanship.
