About the Item

Sculpture of “budai” in resin. The sculpture shows the character, Budai, reclining in a relaxed manner, with a jovial expression and a prominent belly, surrounded by several monkeys and a snake that interact with his body and robes. According to Chinese tradition, Budai or Pu-tai, meaning “cloth bag”, was a semi-legendary itinerant Buddhist monk from the 10th century, around 1600 years after the birth of the historical Buddha. Budai was a native of Fenghua and lived in China during the Liang dynasty (907-923 AD). His Buddhist name was Qieci and he was considered a man of good character, loving, generous, happy, content and in a good mood. He spread joy and happiness wherever he went. Budai became a famous character in Chinese folk tales and according to some beliefs he is considered to be a Bodhisattva or Maitreya (the future Buddha). In iconography, Budai is portrayed as a fat, smiling, bald man with elongated earlobes and a large belly. He sits on an irregularly shaped carved wooden base.
