About the Item
Although America's sculptors interested in African American life and Black subjects, including Elizabeth Catlett, Richmond Barthé, Sargent Johnson and Augusta Savage, are increasingly appreciated and collected today, others, such as Nathaniel Choate, are still under-recognized for their accomplishments and artistic genius. This extremely rare sculpture of a seated nude male figure, leaning back on his elbows and with one leg dangling down, was sculpted by Nathaniel Choate, who was widely acclaimed in his time, but is lesser known today. Choate studied with several masters in Europe before deciding, after a trip to Greece in 1924, to concentrate on sculpture. He was commissioned to do two major sculptures for Brookgreen Gardens after its founding in the 1930s, "Alligator Bender" and "Eurydice and Orpheus." In 1937, the Architectural League of New York awarded Choate their gold medal for design and craftsmanship in stone carving, and thereafter he sculpted a number of important bas reliefs in large and small formats: for the Federal Building at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair, the Post Office in Pitman, New Jersey, and for the Society of Medalists. This sculpture is especially noteworthy, in that the bronze figure sits on a wood pedestal clad in aluminum. The sculpture is signed on its reverse; this piece is the 5th of an edition of 10 (though it is not known if all 10 were cast).

"Seated Figure, " Important Photograph of Male Nude by Barthe
By Richmond Barthé
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This original black and white photograph of one of Richmond Barthé's rare, little-known sculptures was taken by the famous studio of Morgan and Marvin Smith, who located on West 125th Street next to the renowned Apollo Theater. The Smith brothers moved from their native Kentucky to New York in the early 1930s, and proceeded to establish a studio that brought together almost every major figure in the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, mentoring artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Gwendolyn Knight, Selma Burke, Ernest Crichlow and Robert Blackburn. The Smiths captured the night life of Harlem, including musicians and actors such as Harry Belafonte, Sydney Poitier, Eartha Kitt, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Count Basie, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Hattie McDaniels, Zora Neal Hurston, Step n' Fetchit, Pearl...
