About the Item
French Art Deco Terracotta Sculpture by Ugo Cipriani, 1920s Man Operating Rudder. This striking French Art Deco terracotta sculpture by Ugo Cipriani dates from the 1920s and depicts a man skillfully operating a rudder. Cipriani” on the base (see photo) and bears the mark “Terre Cuite d’Art,” confirming its authenticity and quality.
Ugo Cipriani (1887–1960), son of sculptor Adolfo Cipriani, studied at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and worked across materials including marble, terracotta, bronze, and alabaster. His work reflects the spirit and elegance of the 1920s Art Deco movement. Notably, Cipriani is known for his 1919 bronze monument of Italian nationalist Guglielmo Oberdan, located in Florence.
In 1935, Cipriani emigrated to Paris as a political refugee fleeing Mussolini’s fascist regime, where he continued to create until his death in 1960. This terracotta sculpture is a rare and powerful example of his midcentury artistic legacy.
