About the Item
Large French Art Deco Terracotta Sculpture by Ugo Cipriani (1887-1960), France, ca.1920. This striking large-scale sculpture by Ugo Cipriani (1887-1960) exemplifies the bold elegance of the French Art Deco period. Created in the 1930s, the piece depicts a naked woman in a graceful and fluid pose, capturing both the sensuality and strength characteristic of Cipriani’s work. Carved from terracotta, the sculpture’s warm, earthy tones further enhance its sophisticated presence.
Height: 24" (61 cm)
Width: 20.9" (53 cm)
Depth: 7.5" (19 cm)
The sculpture is signed "U. Cipriani" on the base (see photo), confirming its authenticity. A remarkable example of early 20th-century European craftsmanship, this piece will make a stunning addition to any collection of Art Deco art.
Son of the sculptor Adolfo Cipriani and Emilia Pancani, Ugo Cipriani is the fifth child of a sibship of nine. He lives in the Oltrarno district of Borgo San Frediano.
After studying at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, Ugo Cipriani worked with marble, terracotta, bronze and alabaster in the spirit of the 1920s Art Deco movement. One of his most famous works, a bronze monument (1919) by the Italian nationalist and irredentist Guglielmo Oberdan, is on the square of the same name, in Florence.
In 1935, Ugo Cipriani emigrated to France to escape the fascist regime of Mussolini. He lives in Paris as a political refugee and continues to create there until his death in 1960.
