Venetian Murano Glass Commedia dell'arte White Zanfirico Cane Figurine
About the Item
A fine antique Venetian art glass figurine or sculpture.
Attributed to Salviati.
Depicting a stock character from commedia dell'arte, a form of theater that originated in Italy and was popular in Europe around 16th-18th centuries. We presume she is meant to represent the role of Columbina/La Signora.
In the form of a woman with her hair done up wearing an ornate dress with a large billowing skirt atop a spiral-pattern plinth.
The upper body (and the plinth) is in clear glass with gold leaf inclusions and surface gold leafing throughout. The glass of the skirt with white zanfirico canes with alternating double helix and lattice patterns.
Simply a wonderful piece of Italian art glass!
