About the Item

Extraordinary Murano blown glass sculpture of a stylized sailing ship, made in the last decades of the 19th century on the model of Renaissance aquamaniles. This type of object, with obvious ornamental value, was used as a table container for water or wine, but was often displayed in plain view on sideboards and console tables. The structure, hand-blown in slightly smoked glass, rests on an elegant fluted pedestal and features intricate heat-applied aquamarine glass decorations. The sides are embellished with notched ribbons with lion's head-shaped elements, while the sails consist of a double interlacing of vertical strands of smoked glass and aquamarine. A ribbon-like side handle acts as a handle, surmounted by a worked sphere ending in a pinnacle; on the opposite side is a spout decorated with an aquamarine profile. The overall effect is one of great refinement and formal balance. This type of artifact was produced in various variations by several Murano furnaces, including Salviati, beginning in the 1870s, and remains highly valued on the international antiques market today.
