About the Item

A wood wall sculpture by Swedish-born Mexican artist Waldemar Sjölander. The piece features a woman modeling and looking at the spectator from behind a set of different painter's canvases. The sculpture is made with different pieces of wood that are pasted to the surface on different levels to create the tridimensional effect. The piece is unsigned. The provenance is from the artist's Estate. Waldemar Sjölander (1908 - 1988) was born in Gotemburg. His father was a safe locks inventor and engineer who took him with him to study arts all around Europe. He also worked as a merchant sailor and visited Mexico for the first time in the 1930's. An apprentice of Tor Bjurström, he was part of the Gothenburg Colourists, a prominent generation of Swedish painters. Despite having great success as a painter, he moved to Mexico in 1946 and got the nationality a year later. A pioneer of modern art languages in the then social realism - dominated Mexican art landscape, Sjölander excelled as an artist and teacher of the next generation of national painters and sculptors. His work was rescued from oblivion in an important individual exhibition at Museo Carrillo Gil in 2019.
