About the Item

"Kneeling Woman" which the artist created in 1911 is considered sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck's greatest work and the large scale bronze or marble version is in leading International museums, including MOMA in NYC. He signed Lehmbruck on the top rear near the foot of the model on the original sculpture and vestiges of that original signature are retained in the smaller reproduction presented here. (see last image). In 1966 Alva Reproductions made a museum copy which was made available in museum shops in the USA. This example is from a Palm Beach estate. About the artist: Wilhelm Lehmbruck (4 January 1881 – 25 March 1919) was a German sculptor. Sculptures Lehmbruck's sculptures mostly concentrate on the human body and are influenced by Naturalism and Expressionism. His works, including female nudes, are marked by a sense of melancholy and an elongation of form common to Gothic architecture. Throughout his career, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe placed his friend Lehmbruck's sculptures and those of Aristide Maillol into his buildings and designs. Collections The Lehmbruck Museum (Duisburg, Germany) has in its collection about 100 sculptures, 40 paintings, 900 drawings and 200 graphical works by Wilhelm Lehmbruck. The museum, named after Wilhelm Lehmbruck, was originally designed by his son, Manfred Lehmbruck (1913–1992). The Honolulu Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), Städel Museum (Frankfurt, Germany), and the Tate Gallery (London, England) are among the public collections holding works by Wilhelm Lehmbruck. One of his sculptures can be seen in the Villa Tugendhat.

This is an exquisite bronze sculpture depicting a kneeling woman by Guy Charles Revol. Possibly another interpretation of Venus Kneeling, this young woman is kneeling on her left knee and resting her arms on her right knee, looking over her left shoulder. The piece is signed and numbered on the bronze base. The VALSUANI Foundry Mark is also visible on the base. This is a beautiful piece to showcase on its own. "Guy Charles Revol was born 3 October 1912 , in Paris. He studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and was a sculptor, medallist, and designer. Revol won second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1937. His works include a granite pediment at the Hôtel de Ville in Guéret in the Creuse; a fountain for the Exposition Internationale in Paris in 1937.
