About the Item
This remarkable ceramic sculpture, probably the best work of Elisabeth Andersen Seaver, one of the famous Cleveland School ceramicists -- depicts an Indian chief with full feather headdress, with his wife and child, all in snowy-white dress. Seaver skillfully contrasts the ivory, blue and deep pink tones of her glazes with areas of transparent glaze which reveal the lovely, ruddy color of the clay. Seaver is probably best known for her designs for the Cowan Studios, which also commissioned designs from Waylande Gregory, Viktor Schreckengost, and other great sculptors of the day.

A lovely, touching ceramic piece attributed to Gertrude Kay, a watercolorist and artist active in the 1930s, this sculpture is gorgeously finished in a subtly mottled, rich brown glaze. It depicts a loving domestic scene of African Americans: a mother hugging a girl and boy. Kay was a student of Howard Pyle, the great illustrator and founder of the Brandywine School...

"Shepherd and Shepherdess, " Monumental Art Deco Sculptures, Probably by De Vegh
By Geza De Vegh
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Monumental and dignified, this pair of Art Deco sculptures depict a shepherd and shepherdess, crisply shaped and stylized like the best of 1930s public sculpture, and painted in rich but subdued colors with an effect like sun-bleached stucco. It is our estimation that they were sculpted by Geza De Vegh, the Hungarian-American sculptor who created a range of pieces for the Lenox and Lamberton Scammell porcelain works, both in Trenton, New Jersey, as well as a group of rare ceramic pieces for the Phoenix Company. Importantly, De Vegh's work was very popular among set designers and art directors in Hollywood. His works are evident in the background of important Bette Davis films such as "The Letter," art directed by Carl Weyl; and "Now Voyager...
