Henry Coombes, Sculpture Entitled "Umbrella" 2005; Mixed Media B 1977
By Henry Coombes
Located in London, GB
Henry Coombes, British b.1977- "Umbrella" 2005; mixed media, oil paint on found umbrella, 84cm long, (ARR) Provenance: Purchased from Sorcha Dallas Gallery, Glasgow by the previous owner.
Henry wrote:
“The Umbrella was in my studio in 2005, being rainy Glasgow, I used it, left it open to dry. I was painting a series of oil paintings you can find on my website, ( oil painting section) Glen Golly, Ponker, Lady offering Cock to Fox. I loved what was happening on the pallet more than what was happening on the canvas. So the end of every day I would scrape it off and smear it on the umbrella.
I am somewhat superstitious I believe in the notion of bad luck, I was afraid the open umbrella would upset the painting gods. So the ritual of putting the paint on the umbrella was to change into something new that would appease the spirits of bad luck, and bring good fortune to the painting. Paint is a fluid process will ultimately can not control, and if we try to hard it becomes dull illustration. I teach art in prison I see painting holding together the lives of life prisoners. I have huge faith in its power and same time I am humbled by it every time I go into the studio”.
Henry Coombes’ distinctive art practice has received wide recognition since his graduation from Glasgow School of Art in 2002. He has a multi-disciplinary practice working in painting, collage, drawing, sculpture and film.
Earlier film works like ‘Laddy and the Lady’ and ‘The Bedfords’ explored ideas of class, hierarchy, hunting for sport and Victorian...

Bird Sculpture, circa 1960
Polyester resin and pigments.
Measures: (21.5 x 9.5 x 2.5 cm)
This Polyester resin sculpture representing a bird, in the colors yellow and black
It is part of the series of animal sculptures that Abraham Palatnik made from the 1960s, in small format, they are small jewels of kinetic art, a movement that Palatnik was one of the pioneers.
"Born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in 1928 to a family of Russian Jews, Palatnik moved with his family to Tel Aviv (then Palestine) when he was four years old. He attended Montefiori Technical School, where he specialized in internal combustion engines, and studied art under the tutelage of the painter Haaron Avni and the sculptor Sternshus at the Municipal Institute of Art. When he returned to Brazil in 1948, his output consisted mainly of figurative and landscape paintings and charcoal drawings. However, his encounters with the complex works made by schizophrenic patients at the Pedro II Psychiatric Hospital, where he taught painting workshops alongside Almir Mavignier...

Jumping Horse Sculpture 925 Silver Handcrafted Filigree Technique Germany 2005
Located in Salzburg, AT
This sculpture in 925 silver of a Jumping Horse is a true masterpiece of filigree technique.
Filigree comes from the Latin and consists of 2 words filum (thread) and granum (grain).
With the filigree technique, jewelry and objects are made from tiny threads decorated with beads.
Filigree art made of gold and silver threads.
The goldsmith Naser Al-Ybi was born in Damascus in 1962 and learned this art from his father.
Already in the 3rd generation, this goldsmith technique is successfully practiced professionally in the family.
For 16 years, the artist now lives in Germany and has his own studio.
It is historically traditional wedding and costume jewelry objects from Bavaria and Austria in the finest handmade but also small objects in silver such as horses, ships, trays and a unique object like this motorcycle.
Each piece is unique and will not be 100% identical to the previous one when manufactured again.
The term filigree literally means "grained wire" (from Latin filum "thread, wire" and granum "grain") and refers to fine goldsmith's work made of metal threads with attached metal beads. Figuratively, the term is also used for any other fine decorative form, such as that of an iron cutter or chaser.
It is an ancient ornamental wire bending technique made of delicate, thin wires braided (corded) as if into ropes. It is known since about 2000 BC from Troy. However, the Etruscans also developed this goldsmithing technique to perfection in the 8th century BC. Via Spain and Portugal, filigree work reached Friesland and spread from there to the Netherlands and northwest Germany. Today, filigree work continues to be used especially in the Alpine countries, but also in the Oriental countries for costume or folk jewelry.
Wires of gold or silver are soldered in decorative patterns onto a base of the same material. From the 20th century, the wires are also braided into a fine, openwork web without a base and soldered only at the points of contact. The material thickness of the wires is up to 0.01 mm. For ornamentation, one uses either only knotted wires, or wires cut...
