19th-Century Carved Pine Lion’s Head Architectural Fragment, Mounted on Lucite

About the Item

A substantial and finely carved wooden lion’s head, likely originating from a 19th-century architectural setting, such as a grand entryway, theater, or public building. This striking piece, carved from pine, exhibits remarkable craftsmanship, with deeply incised details capturing the expressive intensity of the lion’s gaze. The stylized mane is rendered in sweeping, voluminous curls, framing the face and emphasizing the bold, symmetrical composition. The furrowed brow and well-defined muzzle add to the lifelike quality, giving the piece a commanding presence. The surface retains evidence of age and historical use, with visible weathering, cracks, and remnants of old paint, suggesting it may have once been part of an elaborately decorated interior or exterior façade. The carving’s substantial depth and relief work indicate it was likely a corbel, keystone, or decorative architectural mount, possibly adorning a doorway, fireplace, or another significant structural feature. Now mounted on a modern Lucite base with a central brass support, this piece has been adapted for display while preserving its integrity as a historical artifact. The juxtaposition of the transparent base against the aged wood highlights its sculptural qualities, making it a compelling decorative element suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. **Dimensions:** 14 inches in width, 20 inches in height, and 12 inches in depth, including the base.
