About the Item

Slice of wood from Arizona's Petrified Forest dating back to the Triassic period. It is a trunk slice complete with bark of the conifer Araucarioxylon Arizonicum an extinct species and is the fossil of the state of Arizona. Good condition diamond polish protected underneath by hard resin mesh. Measures 63x55 cm thickness 2.5 inches 24.8x21.6x1. Weight kg 17-pounds 37. In the Triassic period about 200 million years ago Arizona was a tropical expanse and grew a forest of Araucarioxylon Arizonicum trees that reached up to 60 meters in height with a diameter of about 3 meters, it was very similar to the giant sequoia. A 2007 study highlights that the National Park's petrified logs may be composed of several genera of different species than originally believed. Fallen trees were buried in volcanic ash, and because of the rapid burial and in the absence of oxygen, the wood was not decomposed as if it were left on the surface. The crystallization of wood by turning it into a fossil occurred by means of silica and other minerals dissolved in groundwater that were absorbed by porous wood over many years. Millions of years ago the area sank and was completely inundated with fresh water, sinking into depth came completely buried. Millions of years later the area rose above sea level due to continental plate pressure, the uplift broke the logs, and over time wind and water consumed the sediment rifts, exposing the fossilized wood.
