About the Item

Tetrahedrite with Sphalerite Casapalca Mine, Casapalca, Chicla District, Huarochirí Province, Lima, Peru 7 cm tall x 9 cm wide Ex-collection MIM Museum, Beirut, Lebanon Tetrahedrite gets its name from the distinctive tetrahedron shaped crystals which is very evident in this example. This specimen presents a captivating interplay of natural mineral forms, combining elements of geometry and texture. The central crystal of tetrahedrite is a strikingly sharp, pyramidal form that commands attention. It is surrounded by contrasting elements. The right side of the crystal exhibits very fine tetrahedral growth features. The left side is partially covered with small white calcite scalenohedrons. The deep gray, black, silver, and gold colors give the piece a grounded, yet mysterious feel. The crystalline surfaces contribute a sense of lightness and airy elegance against the heavier backdrop. The most unusual and striking feature is the triangular crystal face at the very front of the tetrahedrite. This is a thin golden layer of chalcopyrite. This specimen was mined about 30 years ago, before or since, we have not seen this unique feature on any tetrahedrite from any locality.
