About the Item

This is an old sake jar. It is thought to be used to age Shaoxing wine, a typical Chinese alcoholic beverage, for a long period of time. After Shaoxing wine is poured into the jar, the rim is covered with lotus leaves and oil paper, then a terracotta plate is used as the lid, the wine is wrapped in bamboo bark, and the jar is then hardened with lime. Originally, it was hardened with clay, but as this method is not available for import, lime is used for jars destined for Japan. The year of manufacture is unknown, but large jars appear to be reused repeatedly, with some lasting for over 100 years. It is believed to date back to the early Showa period (1930-1950). While jars in good condition often have the lime remaining pure white, this one has peeled off, and the changes over time create a landscape-like appearance, giving it a strong presence. Whether displayed as a vase or simply as an object, this item will add a lovely accent to any space. *Please note that you may get some lime on your hands. Jar mouth: 8.5cm Weight: 11.2kg
