About the Item

This Chinese famille rose kamcheng jar is a fine example of late Qing-style porcelain, crafted in the vibrant Dayazhai style circa mid-20th century. The kamcheng, a Straits Chinese term meaning “covered jar,” was traditionally used in Peranakan culture for ceremonial purposes, weddings, or as an elegant storage vessel. Kamcheng jars like this are highly collectible among enthusiasts of Chinese export porcelain and Straits Chinese antiques. Decorated in the vivid famille rose palette against a striking purple ground, this porcelain kamcheng jar displays two seasonal scenes, each rich in symbolism. One side features lush peonies, chrysanthemums, and green foliage with two phoenix birds—a motif often associated with beauty, longevity, and rebirth in Chinese porcelain art. The reverse offers a more delicate tableau of yellow blossoms and a magpie, symbolizing joy, good fortune, and seasonal change, all classic themes in Dayazhai-style porcelain. Further elevating its decorative appeal, the jar is fitted with four delicate pink handles, two on each side, and topped by a vibrant turquoise-glazed foo dog lid—a guardian figure frequently featured in Chinese export porcelain. Measuring 23 cm in diameter and 24 cm in height, this famille rose kamcheng jar is in good condition for its age, with minor interior wear and light surface wear consistent with use, but no chips or cracks. A beautifully executed Chinese porcelain jar, ideal for collectors of Dayazhai porcelain, famille rose porcelain, or Straits Chinese decorative arts. This kamcheng jar embodies the cultural connections between Chinese export porcelain and Peranakan heritage, making it both a decorative centrepiece and a meaningful historical artifact.
