About the Item

Chinese Neolithic Terracotta Frog Storage Jar China, 3rd Millennium B.C. A striking example of Neolithic ceramic artistry, this elegant terracotta storage jar is distinguished by its graceful piriform (pear-shaped) body and dynamic painted decoration. Bold black lines encircle the vessel in rhythmic waves, evoking a stylized frog motif and conveying a sense of motion and fluidity. Delicate dotted detailing adorns the mouth, adding a refined visual contrast that draws the eye upward. Two loop handles are symmetrically placed at the equator, emphasizing the jar’s balanced proportions and enhancing its functional utility. The warm, earthy surface patina attests to its ancient origins, while the intricate linear and dotted designs offer a compelling glimpse into early Chinese symbolic expression. Condition: Very good condition for its age, with expected surface wear, minor abrasions, and encrustations consistent with archaeological context. A light restoration may be visible, also there is a small chip on the rim that does not detract from the vessel’s visual impact or structural integrity. Vessels of this type were likely used for storage and may have held ritual significance within Neolithic communities. Dimensions:Height: 10.25 in. Provenance: Ex West Country, UK collection, acquired in the 1990s. This exceptional piece beautifully illustrates the enduring refinement and decorative sophistication of Neolithic Chinese ceramics.
