A Greek Black Figure Style Grand Tour Hydria, 19th Century Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Description: Depict a heroic subject, possibly related to figures like Achilles or Ajax, given the presence of warriors and the style of the imagery. Hydria is a type of pottery used for carrying and pouring water and is characterized by their three handles: two horizontal ones for lifting and carrying, and a third vertical one for pouring. The figures on the vase are painted in black silhouette against the natural reddish-orange color of the clay, with details added through incision. Black-figure pottery was a prominent style of vase painting in ancient Greece, particularly common between the 7th and 5th centuries BCE. Dimensions: Height: 24cm. Width: 17.5cm. Depth: 13.5cm.
