About the Item

This is a Shigaraki ware ceramic piece, crafted in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Shigaraki ware originates from the Shigaraki region and dates back as far as the 8th century. It is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan that are still active today. (The red dot on the map shows the location of the Shigaraki kiln.) This particular jar is believed to have been made between the late Muromachi period and the early Momoyama period. The form and proportions are characteristic of that era. For reference, we’ve included an image from a catalog showcasing similar Shigaraki pieces from the same period. While typical Shigaraki ware often features warm, reddish-brown or purplish hues, this piece is finished in a rare ash-white tone. Such coloration is thought to result from a firing process known as “reduction firing,” which occurs in a low-oxygen environment inside the kiln. This method gives the piece its calm, greyish-white appearance. A distinctive feature of this piece is the visible presence of feldspar — small white mineral flecks on the surface — which is a hallmark of Shigaraki ware. You’ll notice the tiny white specks scattered across the body. The dry, textured surface evokes the subtle and rustic beauty of wabi-sabi, embracing imperfection and transience. Thanks to its natural texture and subdued color palette, the piece blends harmoniously not only in traditional Japanese rooms but also in modern, minimalist interiors. It makes a beautiful accent whether used to hold flowers or simple branches, adding elegance and character to any space. As for condition, a very fine hairline crack can be seen in the area marked with a red circle in the detailed images. While it is not a structural concern and will not expand further, water may seep through this crack if poured directly. Therefore, if using it as a flower vase, we recommend placing a separate water container inside the jar. The crack is barely noticeable and does not detract from its visual appeal. There are no major chips, and the overall form is well balanced. However, the base is slightly uneven, so it may wobble slightly when placed. For added stability, we suggest applying a thin urethane pad to the bottom if necessary. This rare and captivating piece beautifully embodies the heritage and aesthetic of Shigaraki ware. It makes a refined addition to your interior decor and invites appreciation of Japan’s timeless craftsmanship. We’ve priced it reasonably to help more people discover and enjoy the charm of antiques. Why not show it off to your friends and share a bit of history with them? Weight: 8.7 kg
