About the Item

This pair of antique Dutch Delft blue and white tobacco jars, made at De Vergulde Bloempot in Delft circa 1770, is hand-painted with lovely scrolling foliage, leafy vines, and blossoms. Both jars bear the bold inscription “DÜÎNKERKER”. A stylized vase bursting with leaves and flowers crowns the design. Originally intended for use in a tobacco shop, these jars served both as containers and as decorative advertisements. Their cobalt blue decoration remains vivid and detailed, standing out beautifully against the white tin glaze. Condition is excellent. One jar carries the mark of De Vergulde Bloempot factory, which operated in Delft from 1654 to 1841. A closely related jar is preserved in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, attributed to De Porceleyne Schotel (The Porcelain Dish), active under Johannes van Duijn from 1764 to 1772. The museum notes that the name “DÜÎNKERKER” refers to a type of chewing tobacco more commonly spelled “DÜÎNKERKEN.” The jars are capped with later 20th-century brass covers in the traditional form. Background on Dutch Delft Delftware production began in the 17th century and reached its golden age by the mid-1600s. Potters perfected the technique of coating earthenware with a white tin glaze, then adding a clear overglaze to enhance depth and brilliance. Their mastery of cobalt blue decoration gave Delft a reputation across Europe for producing works that closely resembled porcelain. Background on Tobacco Use in the Netherlands In 18th-century Holland, tobacco use was widespread and socially acceptable, especially pipe smoking. Jars such as these were integral to the trade, both as storage vessels and as markers of the type of tobacco sold. The Dutch Republic’s global trade networks, led by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), ensured a steady supply of tobacco from colonies in North America and the East Indies, fueling demand throughout Europe.
