Very old Japanese pottery Jar "Sueki"/beautiful natural glaze/Excavated item
About the Item
Sue pottery is called "sueki" in Japanese.
Earthenware that was baked at low temperatures is now being baked at high temperatures due to the development of kiln technology.
It is a light gray pottery.
Born in Osaka, "sueki" is gradually being made in various parts of Japan.
This is called "sage be" in Japan, and it is not known in detail what it was used for.
It has a round shape, two semi-circular rings on the shoulder, and a trumpet-like mouth.
It is believed that it was used by hanging a string through the ring.
This is a shape that was made in Kansai around the 6th century, but since it was excavated in the Kanto region, the era is later, so I think it is an item around the 9th century.
A similar pot was published in an art book, so I will post an image.
And this piece is especially amazing.
This is because the unique gray clay of sueki is covered with a natural glaze.
This is not common to all sueki, but some pieces have this condition.
Ash made from straw falls and melts in the heat to become the natural glaze.
The appearance of the natural glaze varies, and no two pieces are the same.
There is also another charm to this piece.
That is the cracks.
There are cracks that look like a slightly cracked eggshell.
This is a phenomenon in which the clay wall accidentally cracks during firing.
In Japan, this is called "yabure".
This is also an embodiment of the Japanese spirituality that gives a sense of wabi-sabi.
None of this is done intentionally, but rather "beauty" that occurs by chance during firing.
Also, there are parts of the mouth at the top that are chipped, and some parts where the chipped parts have been glued back together. The parts circled in red have been glued back together nicely.
As these are excavated items, this kind of thing happens often.
However, by chance, I was lucky enough to fill this container with about 1/3 water and it did not leak.
It can be used as a flower vase.
The part is round and spherical, but there is a piece of pottery that stuck to the bottom during firing, which allows the container to stand on its own.
It is a little unstable, so if you put a small piece of clay on the bottom, it will become more stable.
Such beautiful sueki is quite rare.
Sueki is very popular in Japan, but I want people around the world to know that such beautiful pottery exists in Japan, so I am posting it here as a priority.
If you like it, please consider purchasing it.
It also comes with a wooden box for storage.
I really recommend this item.
