This large Turkish pot was used to store olive oil by generations of families in the Levant. The barrel-shaped body and small opening at the neck minimize exposure to air, light, and heat, keeping the quality of the oil over time. Olive oil has long been a staple in Turkish pantries, and has brought great economic prosperity to Anatolia.

The Aydın region of Anatolia, which is located in western Turkey, has rich history of pottery making, dating back to ancient times. Aydın potters often involve hand-building methods (working with clay by hand using only simple tools) such as coiling, pinching, and slab construction, making this, quite literally, a handmade piece of Anatolian history.
