About the Item

Heavily Worked 19th Century French Brass Jardiniere with Paw Feet and Cherub Handles Almost no part of this French brass jardiniere is unadorned. The vibrant motifs are inspired by natural elements (such as paws) and mythology (genii and angels). This intricately crafted flowerpot was made by a master craftsman in the 19th century, with each piece individually detailed, as evidenced by the carpentry at the bottom of the vessel. The bulbous main body is supported by four large, one-legged paw feet crowned with lilies and volutes, depicting identical scenes extending across both longer sides of the egg-shaped jardiniere. At the thickest point of the jardiniere, wonderful foliate tendrils emerge from the tails of two genii clutching a tall vase. The background is textured, as is the neck, which is decorated with grotesque mascarons, each accompanied by two overflowing cornucopias and foliate borders with birds. This panoramic scene is nestled between two rings of foliate niches, the uppermost beneath a gently rolled, egg-and-dagger border trimmed with pearls. On each short side is an impressive winged putto mount with a protruding cyclorama and a foliate handle. Our brass jardinière with claw feet and putto handles would make a wonderful houseplant pot for any room in the house.
