Indian Hammered Brass Urli Vessel

About the Item

This shallow brass bowl is a monumental version of the Indian open fire cooking vessel known as urli or uruli. Traditionally, these wide metal basins were used for preparing ayurvedic medicines or cooking large quantities of food for gatherings and ritual offerings. Today, the urli is also used as a decorative planter for greenery or floral arrangements or as a water basin for floating flower blossoms. Shaped with grand proportions, this example is hand-made of brass with two loop handles, a constricted neck with a flattened lip, and rounded sides that curve uninterrupted to a short footed base. The urli is beautifully textured with hammer marks and darkened by a deep brown patina. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art. Some oxidation to interior. Minor warping to lip.
