Brassing is the art of working in brass . It consists of shaping sheets of metal such as copper , brass , silver or even tin using different tools, mainly hammers. The different techniques required to create a piece are:
tracing and cutting a blank;
the actual shaping using rolling, bending, folding, stamping and shrinking techniques, etc. ;
assembly by stapling, brazing and edging;
pre-levelling (with a barrel mallet), levelling (postilion hammer and levelling mallets) and the use of punches to mark and shape the reliefs using the embossing technique and various surface treatments for finishing and final plastering of the piece.
Depending on the material used, the shaping operations may be preceded or interspersed with specific heat treatments intended to restore the material's deformability, i.e. to eliminate the hardening caused during working. This may be, for example, annealing for a mild steel or tempering for a duralumin or even successive heating followed by staged cooling (tempering followed by tempering, for example) depending on the requirements of the material being worked, for example:
tin and lead, without annealing;
gold and silver, annealed pale pink tint;
copper, annealed cherry red tint;
Brass must be heated to 500°C, cooled to 300°C, ironed to 700°C, and then cooled slowly.
