1960s Modernist Murano Glass Incalmo Vase by Alfredo Barbini

About the Item

This Murano Glass vase by Alfredo Barbini is a highly collectible and visually striking piece, embodying the beauty, innovation, and artistry of Murano glassmaking during that era. Alfredo Barbini was a renowned glass artist and designer who played a significant role in the development of Murano glass techniques and aesthetics. The term "Incalmo" refers to a glassmaking technique in which separate glass pieces of different colors are fused together to create a harmonious transition between hues. In this vase, the combination of blue and green glass achieved through the Incalmo technique creates a stunning visual effect, showcasing the seamless blending of colors. The addition of Murrine inserts further enhances the vase's appeal. Murrine are small, decorative glass elements created by layering different colors of glass, then cutting the layered glass into cross-sections to reveal intricate patterns. The incorporation of Murrine inserts into the collar of the vase adds depth and texture to the piece, elevating its artistic complexity. The Modernist design of the vase features clean lines, geometric shapes, and a sense of abstraction, reflecting the artistic trends of the 1960s. Murano glass artists of this period often sought to push the boundaries of traditional glassmaking techniques, experimenting with form and color to create innovative and expressive works of art. The vase is in perfect condition and acid signed Barbini Murano on the bottom.

He then worked in the Zecchin-Martinuzzi Furnace alongside the sculptor Napoleone Martinuzzi, the collaboration lasted from 1932-1936 creating the first solid glass sculptures designed by Martinuzzi, this experience will be fundamental for his artistic training. After the closure of the factory, he became a first-rate teacher at the V.A.M.S.A. (Murano Artistic Glass Company, Anonymous Society).
