Carved Koa Wood and Brass Ikebana Vessel Vase, Hawaii

About the Item

Hand carved Koa wood vessel in asymmetrical, organic shape with live edge is outfitted with a brass vase with a frog to accommodate ikebana arrangements. It is signed and dated on the bottom by the artist. Hawaiian Koa, or Acacia Koa, has been used for hundreds of years by the Hawaiians for canoes, paddles, boxes, furniture, and ukuleles. The supply of Koa is low as the Hawaiians have only recently started replanting their Koa trees. Koa is renowned for its iridescent shimmer and luscious color, which ranges from tan to warm gold with brown and black accents and particularly exceptional luster.

Crystalline Glaze Ceramic Ikebana Vase, Blue, American Studio Pottery, 2003
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
The vintage studio pottery ceramic ikebana vase is decorated with crystalline glaze in striking, bright blue and yellow palette. The vase was hand thrown on a wheel; blue color crystals on muted yellow colored base were grown in a kiln during a very long, controlled firing. Each crystalline piece is unique due to the nature of the glaze. The vase was allowed to develop an abundance of distinct, graphic crystals, creating a free-flowing abstract pattern and adding rich texture to the minimally shaped piece. The opening is placed asymmetrically on the side of the vase and is outfitted with flower frog. The vase was made by Wizards of Clay...
